Keeping your Pets Safe on Halloween with Tena Stetler #HauntedHalloweenSpooktacular

Since I'm a big animal person, I’ve compiled a few tips on Keeping your Pets Safe on Halloween.

It's almost time for another spooktacular sequel in the annual Halloween tradition. A holiday beloved in countries around the world, appealing to people looking for fun and thrills-- But for their pets...not so much! Halloween festivities can be stressful, to say the least and downright hazardous at times. A few tips to keep everyone safe and enjoying the holiday!

1. Treats - Chocolate is poisonous to cats, dogs, and parrots. The darker it is the more toxic it is. One ounce of dark chocolate can poison a 50-pound dog. Keep these treats out of your pets' reach. Make sure everyone in your household understands, especially children, how crucial it is that no human treats are given to pets.

2. Alarming sounds and sights - The constant doorbell, ringing, unfamiliar guest, and little monsters running around is a recipe for disaster for your pets. They could try to escape or display unexpected aggression.  Keep your pet sequestered in a section of the home where they can avoid this anxiety-causing activities. Provide food, favorite toys, and check on them often.

3. Don't leave pets outside! Pets have been known to be abused or killed on Halloween night by cruel people. I owned a black cat for twenty-two years, he was the best cat ever. But we made sure to keep him inside several days before Halloween and several days after. Yep he was no pleased!

4. Never take your dog trick or treating for all of the above reasons. Dogs can easily be spooked by all the Halloween hubbub. If they run away or bite someone it will end your evening of fun.

5. Dangerous Decorations - Electrical cords and batteries used to operate the exciting Halloween decorations can be hazardous to your pets. Chewing on cords can cause electrocution, chewing on batteries can cause chemical burns, if swallowed can cause intestinal blockage. Artificial cobwebs look cool as heck, but they can also present a choking or entanglement hazard to curious pets. Nightmarish Pet Costumes - Most pets are happiest in the skin they were born in. LOL Yet pet owners will dress their fur, scaled, or feathered babies up for Halloween. Don't put your pet in a costume unless they are completely comfortable with it.  I admit I dress up my dog and parrot for Halloween. I choose costumes they're comfortable in, do not hinder movement, sight, hearing, or ability to breathe, bark, scream, or meow.

6. Eerie Glow Items - Glow necklaces and Glow sticks can help keep people safe on Halloween, but pets not so much.  They can cause gastrointestinal distress and chewed fragments can pose a choking hazard.

7. One last thought - Opening the door repeatedly for trick-or-treaters creates the possibility of pets to slip outside. Collars and tags work if someone locates and collects your wayward pet. Make sure the information on the tags is up-to-date. Microchips offer permanent identification. Just make sure your information is correct with the company who supports your pet microchips.

"This house may not have a history of magic, but I'd bet it's magical. You're going to put an offer in. Right?"

"As I said before, it may be completely out of my price range."

"I have a feeling the house has been waiting for you." Gwen flung her hand to her mouth, her face flushed, and her gaze swiveled to him. "I don't know what made me say that."

Looking thoughtful, he grinned. "Since the day I stumbled upon Pepper's secret — then discovered that you and I share the gift or curse of gypsy blood, things have been different—" Pausing, he shoved his hand in his jean's pocket and jingled the change in his pocket. "I've been different. It's as if knowing magic exists awakened something in me."

"Join the club. Years ago my best friend Pepper made a believer out of me. In fact, there were times I wished—never mind. Whether it was my outlook or as you said magic awakened. But to be fair, I've always had what I called a sixth sense with animals, attuned to their feelings, almost their thoughts, fears, that kind of thing. Pepper called it my talent. But as we became close, I noticed other abilities… you'll think I'm crazy."

"Try me." He moved closer to her and the front door banged open. Quickly he rushed to the top of the stairs.

Excerpt :

Wax-face seemed to notice Isaac for the first time, widening his eyes - which Isaac saw were gray with cataracts, streaked with red - and leering at the librarian with a predatory fascination. His jaw slowly fell open, a stream of blood flowing down his chin to the floor.
Isaac attempted to flee, but his feet were giving his brain the silent treatment. The best he got out of himself was turning his head to look over his shoulder. Two more lumbering, waxy, blood-dripping freaks limped out from behind bookshelves and toward Isaac.

Our hero would claim for most of his life beyond this event that the sound he emitted was a leonine roar as he suddenly found the courage to fight his attackers off and escape.

However, he knew completely well that the noise which escaped his lungs was a high-pitched, birdlike screech as he attempted to mediate a debate between Panic and Rage over the course of a second or two;

Oh fuck, zombies.

Don’t be ridiculous.

Find a weapon!

You don’t even know how to use any.

Find one anyway!

It’s a library, are we going to papercut them back to death?

Do we think this is the zombie apocalypse?

I feel like we’re wasting a lot of time here.

Panic ceased its babbling and made a noise not unlike a police siren. Rage decided now was as good a time as any to hop on a dream-bus and see the world before the useless skin-sack they inhabited got himself killed, offering Isaac no more survival pointers.

Isaac jerked back around to face the original zombie (a word he was still hesitant to use but had now become the only discernible thought he could latch onto).

The monster had completed its examination, raised its raspy wheeze to a blood-curdling shriek, and made a mad dash for its prey, blood flying every which way from his gaping mouth. Isaac could hear the two behind him do the same.

Well, there you go you useless lump, you went and got us killed.

It’s not his fault, there was nothing in orientation about an after-hours zombie attack.
The argument in Isaac’s head descended into a cacophonic volley of insults, mocking tones, and detailed instructions for the other to misbehave with a tree.

Isaac reminded his debating thoughts that they were all part of the same person, so tree sap on one’s privates is tree sap on the others. Also, he added that the zombies may have been close enough that he could smell iron on their breath, but the well-dressed gentleman with silver hair in the doorway seemed calm and ready to help. By all laws of logic and probability he was aware of, Isaac would be dead in three and a half seconds anyway, so no need for extra stress.

Panic and Rage stared out through Isaac’s eyes. They agreed that there was indeed a rather pale man with silver hair and an incongruously cheerful smirk standing at the fair end of the room, absent the blurry gray doppelganger Isaac normally saw with people and seeming to emit a faint glow. He was dressed in a white suit with vague green specks all over it, with a feathery gold and silver cape to go with it.

Whoever he was, he seemed more-or-less qualified to handle such an unexpected threat.

The new arrival was pointing the palm of his left hand at the scene, his thumb extended at a right angle. He twitched his hand down at the wrist and every molecule in the room sang out in unison, connected by static electricity.

“Dí’prætä.”

A razor-thin hemisphere of light erupted in a three-foot radius around Isaac. The zombies, all of whom had just taken a flying leap for his neck, landed on the bubble and bounced off.

They each landed on their backsides with a dull thud, totally incapable of processing this development. They caught the pale man’s scent and turned on him, assuming he would make a decent meal as well.

The suited man shut his eyes and delicately pressed his fingertips together, then his palms before he turned them toward the zombies. He intoned a series of syllables in a steady waltzing rhythm, continuing to use the molecular structure of the library as a network of loudspeakers.

“Tä’gläcí äy æ’chévän.”

They all froze, and a few of Isaac’s rapid heartbeats later the monsters disappeared into thin air. As they went, the electric buzz throughout the area died down until it vanished entirely, along with the bubble around Isaac.

Without a word, the new arrival sniffed the air like a bloodhound while wandering toward Isaac. He stopped every few steps and screwed up his face in concentration. He finally followed his nose to Isaac and began sniffing the young man’s scalp, seeming to not notice there was a person under the hair. He jumped back in surprise when he finally did.

“Oh, I am so sorry! I did not realize that you were a person.” The new man said with a grin and an accent with traces from most of Western Europe. His voice, though still bouncy and full of life, had lost the musical quality it had when the entire building spoke for him.

“Who are you?” The stranger asked.

Isaac stared at him without blinking, “Uh…Buh” floating through his mind again. He waded through a mess of scattered vocabulary to find a coherent response until he finally landed on, “I-Isaac Falc-cone.”

The activation of the various anatomical components required for speech set off a domino effect which rattled every other bit of their host, who began to shake violently as tears once again fell down his face.

The newcomer twitched slightly. “Just a fair warning, Uh-Buh, you ought to take care not to give away so much of your name to strangers. I mean you no harm, but many entities may take it as an invitation.”

“Inv… Wha…” Isaac stammered.

The man with the silver hair smiled, grabbed Isaac’s wrist, and helped him to his feet. He swept some loose zombie dust from Isaac’s clothes, looked him in the eye, and spoke with extraordinary calm. Isaac couldn’t decide if he was comforted by or terrified of the stranger.

“Unimportant. Uh-Buh I-Isaac Falc-Cone, nice to meet you,” The visitor said, still holding on to Isaac’s wrist. “You may call me L’æon. Næ’vös shívæ!”

However, he didn’t decide to pursue it as a profession until he realized that working in retail was completely draining his remaining life force.  And so, Adams set out to create a fascinating and captivating novel, which he achieved in his debut work, “Dead Man Walking”.

Having a general distaste for his current reality, Zach aspires to escape into the science fiction and fantasy worlds that he creates. And by doing so, he aims to share this escapism with his readers (who are probably also incredibly tired of the current state of things).

Zach was raised by an anthropomorphic ostrich, and is a seasoned time traveler. Coincidentally, he also enjoys making up utter nonsense about himself. Currently, Adams lives in Alaska with his cat Gamora (who he does not plan to sacrifice on Vormir).

Vampire Makeup Tutorial with Elise Nelson #PNR

Hi! I’m Elise Nelson, author of Smoke and Mirrors: A Vampire Romance.

Today, I want to give you a vampire look for Halloween (or for any day you’re feeling vampiric 😉).

I’m no good at makeup tutorial videos, but I love makeup, so I will write down some of my favorite products that would create a great vampire look this Halloween. The best part is you can pretty much buy this look at any grocery store that sells makeup—stores like Walmart, Target, or Walgreens. However, for the exact look, you’ll need to also purchase some of the products on the MAC website, or at a location near you (the MAC products can be replaced with your own personal favorites, though, as mentioned below).

Products to get:

L’Oreal carbon black liquid eyeliner

L’Oreal Voluminous carbon black mascara OR any mascara and ArdellWispies eyelashes (and your choice of lash glue)

L’Oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black Noir

MAC cream concealer in your color (or your choice of concealer)

L’OrealTRUE MATCH LUMI Glotion (whichever light shade works best for your skin, but I’m fair, so I use (“901 Fair Glow”)

MAC Cruella eyeshadow collection palette (or your choice of black, dark green, and maroon or purple eyeshadow.

Two small eyeshadow brushes of your choosing. I don’t know the brand of mine, but any two like the two small ones below should work:

IL MAKIAGE Lip Slip in Red Brick lipstick (or your choice of red lipstick)

Step One:
Put the concealer under your eyes to brighten them up before you put the dark makeup on.

Step Two:
Line your eyes gently with the L’Oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black Noir. We are going to also lightly line it with the liquid liner too, and if you use too much of this smoldering eyeliner, you’ll look more like a raccoon than a vampire.
You’ll want to create wings with your eyeliner that point up at a high angle (especially if you don’t have big eyes).

Step Three:
Lightly line your eyes with the liquid liner now to define the eyes more and to perfect the wings.

Step Four:
Either lightly put a mascara of your choice on your eyes and then place the Ardell wispies on or use the L’Oreal Voluminous carbon black mascara to create the appearance of long, thick lashes that are dark and beautiful.

Step Five:
Next, gently put the L’Oreal TRUE MATCH LUMI Glotion on your eyelids. If you prefer to do this before the eyeliner you can, but I prefer to do it after because it can make it hard to define the eyeliner properly because it makes things a little slick on the eyelids.

Create a thin layer mostly rubbed in from the top of your eyeliner to your browbone.

Step Six:
Use two different makeup brushes for the eyeshadow, whichever ones you usually use. Any makeup brushes that look like the two smaller ones in the list above will work (I don’t use these brushes, but I don’t know the brand for mine; any good brushes will do):
Use the small makeup brush with the rounded top to put a layer of either the dark red eyeshadow or purple eyeshadow across your lid. I use the purple one.

Step Seven:
Next, use the small makeup brush with the pointed tip to use either the black eyeshadow in the Cruella palette or the dark, shimmery green one to use on the edges and around near the browbone to create a smokey eye effect. The level of smokey eye is your decision to make, depending on how dark and vampiric you want to look. I choose to use the dark, green shimmery eyeshadow in the Cruella palette.

Step Eight:
Final step. Use whatever red lipstick you prefer to create that perfect blood-red pout that will complete your vampiric look. I use the IL MAKIAGE Lip Slip in Fire Brick for mine.

Extra Optional Step:
Use the silver in the Cruella makeup palette to add a little sparkle to the corners of your eyes (which I love to do, but if you want to keep your look dark, feel free to skip this step). I just put it on my finger and dab it in the corners.

Tagline: In the shadows, nothing is ever what it seems

Book Description:

Caroline Blake is a young reporter with a past almost as cryptic as her future. She never put much stock into her late aunt’s eerie tales of monsters and demons until she takes an assignment to cover the elusive Ashdown family’s Harvest Festival. As part of her assignment, she must live at the family’s mansion for six weeks and help prepare for the event.

No one has seen the family since the tragedy that occurred at the last festival almost thirty years prior. As the only female reporter on-site, Caroline must hold her own while uncovering why the family closed their doors all those years ago.

Perhaps the most challenging part of her assignment is dealing with her working partner, William Ashdown. The handsome lord of the house seems bent on testing her patience every time they meet. Still, there is something intriguing about him that she can’t ignore.

Caroline is soon swept into a world of generational secrets, unsettling mysteries, and unexpected romance. Amidst all the uncertainty, one thing is sure: in the shadows, nothing is ever what it seems.

Excerpt 2:

“You have each been paired with someone in the house whom you will shadow and work with over the next few weeks . . .” her voice trailed off as someone from across the hall caught her eye.

“Ah, here my brother is now. William, dear, come greet our guests!” Her voice was melodic as it moved through the room. She raised a hand above her head, as if to coax her brother over.

I couldn’t see the man in question; I was in the back of the others, and he was coming from the opposite end of the room. But judging from the fact that he hadn’t been there to greet us, and from his silence now, I’d say he was avoiding this very moment. Soon enough, however, I heard footsteps and Evelyn’s jubilant laugh. “Ah, William, please greet our guests. They wondered why the lord of the house wasn’t there to say hello to them when they arrived.”
There was a brief awkward silence, as it was clear that none of us had asked for him, and
William likely knew it. “It’s a pleasure,” he said finally, his deep voice tight with bored insincerity. I tried surreptitiously standing on my toes but still couldn’t see him very well. The men in front of me were blocking my view. I liked to think they weren’t doing it intentionally, but I had my doubts.

I could only see part of his head and one of his shoulders, fitted in what appeared to be an extremely expensive black suit. Despite how new and crisp it looked, as dark and fine as any suit

I’d ever seen, it still wasn’t as beautifully dark as the hair that fell softly on his forehead. Smooth and thick, like the feathers of a crow. His fingers moved through it as he continued.

“Thank you all for coming. We look forward to your stay.” His voice was cavalier, and it was clear he didn’t want to be here, which I found odd. Why wouldn’t the lord of the manor want to greet his new employees and shake our hands? Wasn’t he the one who wanted us here?

My acceptance letter had come from him.

“William is very busy,” Evelyn said, the words rushing from her lips, “but he will be joining us for supper tonight. Isn’t that right?”

There was a small pause before her brother replied. “Yes, of course.” He stepped closer in my direction, and I glimpsed his profile briefly before he turned back one more time and added,

“I will see you all then, and we’ll have a proper greeting. Now, if you’ll excuse me.” He smiled stiffly, and I wondered if anyone else could tell how little he wanted to be here. He was about to turn away when he saw me.

Our eyes locked. The faux mask he’d worn to feign pleasantries disappeared like smoke. His mouth fell partly open, and for a moment, it was as if we knew each other. As if we always had but had just forgotten. Yet, he also seemed so new to me. Like I’d never seen someone who looked quite like him before. Someone whose eyes looked into mine so unabashedly. Someone whose single glance left me breathless. A rush like white-hot fire burned against my skin, and I couldn’t look away. I didn’t know what it was about him, but in his eyes I saw something familiar. As if he were a memory or a dream I’d long forgotten.

Witchy Wednesday - A Quick Guide to Using a Pendulum

Using a pendulum is a form of dowsing. One of the first forms of dowsing was using a stick, or wand, to find water. There are pictographs on the walls of Tassili Caves in Algeria that depict human figures holding forked sticks, which could have been dowsing rods.

A pendulum is a balanced weighted object, most commonly symmetrical with a point, which hangs from a string, chain, or cord of some kind. Pendulums can be made of anything- wood, metal, stone, or crystal. Some people simply use a key or ring hanging on a string.

Ancient Chinese records indicate a ring suspended on silk thread was used to predict the future and avert danger. There are also accounts from ancient Rome of rings suspended on string being used to divine information.

In 1326 C.E. Pope John XXII issued a bull that directly attacked the use of pendulums and any other dowsing tool claiming the answers came straight from the devil. Users were persecuted and often executed for witchcraft.

Dowsing tools were then disguised as tradesman tools. For instance, the plumb bob still used today by carpenters.

Records of scientific experiments involving pendulums date back to the 1700s. Johann Wilhelm Ritter, known as the father of electro-chemistry, concluded that the pendulum could provide answers to anything by connecting with the universal mind or what Carl Jung later coined the “collective unconscious”.  This influenced many other studies throughout the centuries.

Today a pendulum is the most popular form of dowsing used.

Interested in trying it yourself?

Here are the basics:

Choose Your Pendulum

You’ll want to choose a pendulum that speaks to you, one that you really connect with.

I prefer using crystal pendulums. I currently have 3 different ones. One is a Bloodstone gifted to me by my bestie, another is a Sunstone that I purchased with a group of stones to sell but when I took it out of the package it started shaking and moving around like it had something to say so that one became mine, and then my final one is a Hematite pendulum that really spoke to me as I was perusing the wares at a small crystal shop owned by a friend. Whenever I seek guidance I pull out all three and “feel” them to see which one feels right at that time.

Cleanse

Before using your pendulum be sure to cleanse it, there are many ways to cleanse magickal items. Here are just a few- you can put them in sunlight, in moonlight, in a bowl of rice overnight, run it through cleansing smoke, or place it in a singing bowl and cleanse it with sound.

Protect

Many people believe they are consulting their own subconscious when using a pendulum. They are tapping in to their higher self to seek answers.

Other people think they are talking to the universe, angels, guides or spirits. Some actively seek out spirits to talk to using a pendulum. I recommend casting a protective circle around yourself if you are consulting anything or anyone other than your higher self. You can also set Reiki wards; have a bowl of salt next to you, or use any other personal protections that you prefer.

Get in the Right Frame of Mind

Get comfortable and do a quick meditation or breathing exercise to clear your mind before beginning. I find this helps me focus on my questions and get a better response. I also like to light incense and candles.

How to Hold It

One common way to hold the pendulum is draped over your dominant hand’s index finger. The pendulum should hang well enough below your hand so it has room to swing freely.

Another common way to hold it is between the thumb and forefinger and let it dangle.

Work with it and find what is most comfortable for you.

Connect with Your Pendulum

Before you’re ready to start asking questions you’ll want to establish a connection with the pendulum.

Some people touch it to their third eye and heart chakras- to connect it to the head and the heart.

Next you’ll want to establish how it answers questions.

Ask it to show you “yes”. Then ask it to show you “no”. You can also ask it to show you “maybe” or “I don’t know”. This establishes which way the pendulum swings when it answers your questions.

Test it by asking questions with definitive answers- “Is my name…?”, “Do I live at …”. Be sure to ask both definitive yes and no questions. This will confirm the yes and no swings.

The next question you should ask is “Do you want to work with me today?” or “Will you work with me today?”

Honor its answer. If it says yes you are ready to continue.

Ask Your Questions

Ask simple yes or no questions, but be specific.  Wording is very important.

In between questions I like to “ground” the pendulum by gripping the crystal with my left hand to stop it from swinging. This brings it back to zero before asking another question.

Some people use pendulum charts or boards to get more than just yes or no answers. Some pendulum spirit boards have letters like an Ouija board. Others have a variety of answers beyond yes or no.

Maps can also be used if you are trying to locate something.

When you are done with your session thank the pendulum for its guidance and put it away until next time.

My Haunted Vacation Sleepy Hollow NY #HauntedVacation #SpookyRoadTrip

The last stop on our Spooky Summer Roadtrip was Sleepy Hollow, New York.

We tried to hit all the main spooky attractions that were in or around New England and along our road trip route, plus a side trip into New York City. We had to see Times Square and Central Park.

The first stop on our road trip was the Lizzie Borden House, then we hit Salem, MA, then ended at Sleepy Hollow. I do hope to visit Salem again.

There was so much we didn't get to see in the short amount of time we were there.

Honestly, by the time, we were ready to explore Sleepy Hollow we were exhausted and ready to head home.

But we still hit the cemetery, saw the bridge, and found Washington Irving's grave site.

On our way out of town, we stopped at the neat Headless Horseman statue and made a quick trip into a gift shop.

I wish we would have had more time and not been so tired but we tried to do all the things while on that side of the US and it was just too much.

Next time we fly and we stick to one city/area to explore.

I'm too old, cranky, and impatient to sit in a car for 14-16 hours again.

Have You Seen A Michigan Cryptid?

Michigan has numerous tales of weird creatures roaming the wilderness, the most popular is the Michigan Dogman.

There are also stories about lake monsters, melon heads, sasquatch, and wendigo.

There's even a tale about a little red devil that haunts Detroit, Le Nain Rouge.

Have you encountered any of these monsters?

If so I'd love to hear about it.

Please fill out this form https://forms.gle/WTpFeyKRznhDtXkm9 or send your story to hauntedflintauthor@gmail.com
