I grew up watching The Munsters, The Addams Family, Bewitched and Scooby Doo.
Many of my favorite shows and movies have featured witches.
Here are a few of my favorites (oddly enough many of them are about to get revamped, rebooted or remade with new actors)
Samantha
from Bewitched
Samantha gets top billing because as far back as I
can remember she was my first witch. I adored this show and always thought
Darrin was an idiot.
He should have appreciated Samantha’s magic.

Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Willow gets the next spot because nerd girls rule.
And because Buffy remains in my top ten favorite TV shows of all time. Buffy got me through some very, very hard times.

Willow rocked- even
when she went all dark and destructive- or perhaps because she did go all dark
and destructive.
I loved that her power grew over time, I appreciated that the show spotlighted addiction and coming to terms with it even if it was about magic and not drugs. I also like that they had Willow learn how to control her powers and deal with her addiction.
Buffy was a groundbreaking show on many levels.
This is one of the shows lined up for a revamp- first rumors said reboot. But no, it looks more like a remake. Which had fans (including me) screaming hell no. There is only one Buffy. (That awful movie does not count-ever). Later news states that it will be a sequel to the original- new slayer, new stories. That's fine, just don't mess the original.
I've watched the entire Buffy series from beginning to end a couple times. #TeamSpike I know that die hards will argue, yes Angel and Buffy's love was epic and very star crossed, and like Romeo and Juliet, tragic. Which is why I choose Spike- he got a soul for Buffy. He loved her without a soul. Angel was an ass without a soul, Spike was still Spike. So Spike was the better man.

Sally
and Gillian Owens from Practical Magic
Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies of all
time.
I have watched it over and over and over. There’s so much to love- sister bonding, the aunts, and the love story - “I wished for you”.
My daughter and I have watched it together so many times she has made me promise, on her 21st Birthday there will be midnight margaritas!

Good, bad, powerful…Bonnie. Just like any teenager
she had to figure out who she was and what she could do. And she had the added
struggle of magic- going dark, being in control…she earns this spot for all
that- and all the crap she went through on The Vampire Diaries. I think she was one of the most tortured characters...she sure died a lot.
The Vampire Diaries ended last year and the spin off, The Originals ended a few nights ago. But the universe lives on with Legacies, coming this fall.

Again, sisters, witches, magic- and all the drama
that brings. What a fabulous show this was. I plan on revisiting it one day via
Netflix- from episode one to the end. I've hopped around revisiting favorite episodes but never watched it all the way through. Maybe I’ll get to see all the episodes I missed- you know back before DVRs.
I'm torn about the reboot. I want to watch it because it's a supernatural show...but remake.
Ugh. If I can separate it from the original maybe I can like it. The trailers look pretty good.

Hermione
Granger from Harry Potter
How can I not include a Harry Potter character here?
Hermione earns this spot because she rose to the top despite the odds being stacked against her.
Plus I have to admire her know it all attitude. Once again nerd girls rule.

This show has a special place in my heart because it
reminds me of my younger years. It was not particularly fabulous but it was
cute and didn’t require much brain power to enjoy. It was fun and sometimes
that's all I needed. Just a whimsical distraction. This is another witchy show getting a reboot.
The new Sabrina premiers in October on Netflix and is said to be much darker than the 90s version. It’s officially based on the graphic novel, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is definitely more horror than whimsy.

Alexandra
Medford, Jane Spofford, Sukie Ridgemont from Witches of Eastwick
If you’ve watched this, I don’t even need to
explain. If you have not watched it, find it online. (It's on Amazon) These three witches are amazing- just don’t cross them.
This tv show was loosely based on the movie and the
original novel. I loved this show and thought it was fabulous- funny, sexy and
definitely for adults. I’m not sure if it was the wrong time slot, wrong channel,
bad timing or what but sadly it didn’t last. I can't even find the episodes streaming anywhere. So odd.
This is another movie I've watched over and over. Also another movie that I got my daughter hooked on.
Robin Tunney’s character in The Craft was great. She was the new girl and had a history. So that immediately made her the underdog. Then she gets involved with some crazy bitch witches that just want her power and when they don’t need her they turn on her.
And she has to overcome her history and revel in her real magical abilities.

The Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus
This year is the 25th Anniversary of Hocus Pocus! Hard to believe I've been watching this movie for so long. And it's still just as entertaining today as it was 25 years ago, perhaps more so because now when I watch it I have all the Halloween memories of watching it with my family each previous year.
Love! Halloween is my fave time of year too! So excited for all the awesome things happening this year! I've seen everyone one of these movies/shows! Great list!
ReplyDeleteHalloween is the best time of year :-)
