I have been a terrible witch for years. I haven't celebrated the witchy holidays like I celebrate the standard American holidays like Christmas. Even though I don't consider myself a Christian I still follow the calendar and holidays I was raised with, but slowly I am integrating the witchier holidays into my life.
I fully came out of the broom closet several years ago and my two youngest children have chosen to follow in mom's Pagan footsteps so they too are interested in celebrating the events on the Witch's Wheel of the Year.
(Fun fact- many standard Christmas traditions have Pagan origins)
I never wanted to force any religion on my children and choose to let them do their own research and experiment with what they felt drawn to. But they really seemed interested in my witchy world. They started going to events with me and they delved into their own research. While my eclectic practices incorporate Native American, Celtic, and Greek deities and traditions they are currently both interested in Nordic traditions.
With time on my hands (thanks COVID) I started researching Yule customs and decided that in addition to Christmas, we will be celebrating Yule this year. Fully celebrating as a family. Not just me lighting my Yule Log candles and reciting some blessings.
I found many great online resources and I checked out Yule: Rituals, Recipes & Lore for the Winter Solstice from the library.
And one of my Secret Santas sent me Llewellyn's Little Book of Yule.
Another book I'm considering is Amy Cesari's Coloring Book of Shadows: Yule Papercraft for a Magical Solstice. I adore her books and this one is all crafty things which I also love. Check out this video showcasing the book.
How awesomely exciting. Winter came-a-calling extra early in our wee corner of Canada, with the first snowfall tumbling down well over a month ago now. Flakes have scarcely stopped falling since then, and as a result, I'm in even more of a Yule season mood than usual (or at least, said mood has arrived earlier this time around).
